Break that Mirror

Being sandwiched between conformity and dreams sometimes really makes me don’t know what to do. People expect you to be a doctor, a lawyer, to be of high social postion in the society, while you just want to be a free-spirited poet, a traveller who loafs on the soft meadow, a carefree human not dominated by worries.

People look at ourselves as though we were mirrors, reflecting their own images to their eyes. They aren’t looking at us at all, they are only looking at themselves, in the mirror. Yet, they try to convince us and themselves that we ought to be what they see. They neglect the true self of a person behind the mirror that they place between us.

     That mirror, is conformity.

It is easy to expect people to be like what we imagine them to be. After all, human are ignorant and self-centred. We tend to be oblivious too. We like forcing the others to not be themselves, but to be the one we would like them to be.

However, sometimes, which seems to be an irony, we do place mirrors in front of ourselves. We place mirrors in front of us so that people can look at their reflections (aka their expectations) and be happy. We place mirrors in front of us so that we are then easily accepted by others, so we can gain approvals.

This is life—- choosing between people’s expectations and your will. It is never easy, even for me who is writing this now. Whether you would place that mirror in front of you or not, remember, that there is always a true self of a person behind all those mirrors. Try to break the mirror between you, and forget your own reflections.
